In Hawaii, it’s called the Noni fruit (morinda citrifolia) but it has many other names -nunaakai, great morinda, Indian mulberry, dog dumpling, apatot, mengkudu, pace, kumudu, cheese fruit, beach mulberry and more!

The noni fruit is native to Australasia and Southeast Asia, it belongs to the coffee family of plants and is called the “Queen of the Morinda” because it’s so useful. It’s green while growing and turns yellow when it ripens. It gives off a pretty nasty smell! (Luckily, you can enjoy its benefits without the odor!)

Noni fruit is rich in minerals (potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and iron), almost all the vitamins and lots of wonderful antioxidants.

Noni fruit is excellent for treating various ailments.

Diarrhea Treatment: Noni fruit has antibacterial agents that can combat the bacteria (Salmonella and E. Coli ) that cause diarrhoea. In some cases it has been shown to be more effective for bacterial diarrhea than antibiotics or drugs.

Cardiovascular Health: It can help to regulate blood pressure and maintain heart health as well as cholesterol.

Fight Infections: Regular consumption of noni fruit can fight against fungal and bacterialinfections including on the skin

Immune System Booster: It’s useful for strengthening immunity including producing more lymphocytes.

Liver Protection: It contains hepato-protective agents that help to heal the liver.

Reduce Arthritis: Arthritis pain is reduced due to this fruit having anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties.

Skin Care: It’s commonly used in skincare and beauty products because it helps stimulate collagen and inhibit wrinkles.

Toothache Reliever: Noni is antibacterial so it helps to eliminate the bacteria causing the swelling while the analgesic acts as a painkiller.

Treat Diabetes: There is some research to show that eating noni fruit can reduce symptoms of type 2 diabetes (by reducing the level of serum triglycerides, LDL cholesterol, and glycosylated hemoglobin).

How Can You Eat Noni Fruit?

You’ll probably find noni most commonly as a juice, and it has a slightly bitter taste. It’s often marketed as a health tonic – but beware of added sugar, sweeteners and other additives.

If you have access to fresh noni fruit, you can prepare a juice at home as follows –

Noni Juice Recipe

You’ll need 1 or 2 ripe fruits for this juice. If it still feels hard, leave it on your kitchen countertop for several days until it feels soft. (But use it before it turns white completely).

  • 1 or 2 noni fruit
  • A blender or juicer
  • Water (enough to cover the fruit)
  • A strainer (if you’re using a blender)

Add cold water and the noni to the blender or juicer.
Blend it and then strain the juice to remove the seeds – if you use a juicer, you won’t need to do this.

To drink, you can add water, or some honey to sweeten it, or a few slices of pineapple or orange to add some lovely flavor to it.

Be Aware!

Noni fruit is very nutrient-dense and potent. In rare cases, it may cause problems if you have liver or kidney issues.

Noni may cause abortion so do NOT take noni if you are pregnant or even breastfeeding.

If you are on any medication, please consult your doctor before using a noni health tonic.
